rt preparing. Taking a little time now to organize your information and think about what you need from your health coverage can make the enrollment process easier when it's time to compare plans.

Then give us a call to set up an enrollment appointment. We’ll help walk you through your options, answer your questions, and ensure we are prepared when enrollment season starts.

          1. Think About How You Used Your Coverage This Year

Start by looking back at your healthcare needs over the past year. Did your current plan work well for you? Were your doctors in-network? Did you start seeing a new specialist or begin taking a new medication? Did you have higher out-of-pocket costs than you expected?

Make a quick list of what worked and what didn't. This can help you identify what's most important when you compare your 2027 options.

          2. List Your Doctors and Prescriptions

Before Open Enrollment begins, make a list of:

Doctors and specialists you want to continue seeing

Hospitals or healthcare facilities you prefer

           Prescription medications and dosages

           Your preferred pharmacy

Provider networks and covered drug lists can vary between plans and can change from year to year. Having this information ready will make it easier to check your options.

          3. Review Your Income and Household Information

Marketplace financial assistance is based in part on your expected household income and household information for the year you're seeking coverage.

Think about whether anything has changed, including your income, household size, address, or access to other health coverage. You'll want to provide accurate, up-to-date information when you complete your 2027 Marketplace application.

          4. Watch for Important Coverage Notices

If you already have Marketplace coverage, watch for information from both your insurance company and the Marketplace. These notices can tell you whether your current plan will be available next year, whether you're being matched with a plan for automatic re-enrollment, and what may be changing with your coverage or costs.

Keep these notices somewhere easy to find. They'll be helpful when it's time to review your options.

          5. Be Alert for Open Enrollment Scams

As Open Enrollment approaches, you may see more health insurance ads and receive more calls, texts, or emails about coverage. Be cautious with unsolicited communications, especially if someone pressures you to act immediately or asks for personal, financial, or Marketplace account information. Don't provide sensitive information unless you're confident you know who you're dealing with.

If something doesn't seem right, contact the Marketplace, your insurance company, or a trusted licensed insurance professional like us to ensure you are working with credible advisors through this process.

          6. Mark the Important Dates

For states using the federal Health Insurance Marketplace,

Open Enrollment begins November 1 and runs through January 15

. State-based Marketplaces may have different deadlines, so check the enrollment dates that apply where you live.

There's another important date to remember:

          December 15

. Enroll in or change plans by December 15 to start new coverage on January 1, 2027. If you enroll between December 16 and January 15, your coverage will begin on February 1, 2027.

Get Ready Now, Compare in November

You don't need to choose a plan yet. For now, your job is simply to get organized. Gather your information, think about what you need from your health coverage, and keep an eye out for important notices. Then, when Open Enrollment begins, you'll be ready to take a closer look at your options.

Have questions before Open Enrollment begins? We're here to help you get prepared for 2027.

How Medicare Enrollment Can Create Consequences for Your HSA Contributions

Many Americans spend years building savings in a Health Savings Account (HSA), one of the most tax-advantaged ways to save for health care expenses. HSA funds can be used for many qualified medical expenses, including deductibles, copays, coinsurance, prescription medications and certain medical equipment… even when you are on Medicare. That is why HSAs can be such an important part of your retirement planning.

But when Medicare enters the picture, the rules can lead to unexpected tax consequences.

Where Medicare Can Create a Problem with HSAs

Some people continue working after age 65 and remain covered by an employer-sponsored HSA-eligible high-deductible health plan (HDHP). That's allowed. Simply turning 65 or becoming eligible for Medicare doesn't automatically prevent you from contributing to an HSA.

The issue begins when you are actually enrolled in Medicare.

Once you're enrolled in Medicare Part A and/or B, you generally can no longer contribute to an HSA.

The confusion is that Medicare enrollment doesn't always happen when people expect it to.

One way this can happen is through Social Security benefits. If you're already receiving Social Security benefits when you become eligible for Medicare, you're generally automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. While Part B can generally be declined, premium-free Part A usually takes effect automatically. Once Part A coverage begins, you're no longer eligible to contribute to an HSA, even if you're still working and covered by your employer's HSA-eligible health plan.

That means someone could continue making HSA contributions through payroll, or continue receiving employer contributions, without realizing that Medicare coverage has kicked in and made them ineligible to make those contributions.

A second issue can arise when someone delays Medicare while continuing to work and contribute to an HSA. When that person later applies for premium-free Medicare Part A after age 65, their Part A coverage can generally be retroactive for up to six months, but not earlier than the month they first became eligible for Medicare.

This creates a potential HSA problem because a person can't make HSA contributions for months in which they're covered by Medicare. If Part A is applied retroactively, HSA contributions made for those retroactively covered months may become excess contributions, even though the person wasn't aware at the time that Medicare coverage would later reach back to those months.

For example, someone who works past 65, keeps an HSA-eligible employer plan and delays Medicare might continue contributing to an HSA. If they later enroll in Medicare and receive six months of retroactive Part A coverage, some of those recent HSA contributions may no longer be allowable.

That's why it's important for people who work past 65 to coordinate the timing of Medicare enrollment, Social Security benefits, and HSA contributions.

          The Potential Tax Consequences

The IRS generally imposes a 6% excise tax on these “excess” HSA contributions that aren't corrected as permitted under IRS rules. The tax can apply for each tax year the excess remains in the account.

In some cases, an individual may be able to avoid the 6% excise tax by withdrawing the excess contribution, along with any earnings attributable to it, by the applicable tax-return deadline and properly reporting the correction.

Because the tax treatment depends on the circumstances and timing, anyone who discovers a possible excess contribution should consider contacting the HSA custodian and a qualified tax professional.

How to Avoid HSA Contribution Problems

If you're approaching Medicare eligibility, planning to enroll in Medicare, or applying for Social Security benefits after age 65, review your HSA contribution strategy ahead of time. The correct time to stop contributing isn't the same for everyone.

For example, if you enroll in Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, you generally need to make your last HSA contribution for the month before your Medicare Part A coverage begins. Special rules can apply if your birthday is on the first day of a month.

If you delay Medicare and later enroll in premium-free Part A, Medicare recommends accounting for the possibility that Part A coverage will be retroactive. If you enroll six or more months after turning 65, that generally means stopping HSA contributions six months before the month you apply for Medicare or Social Security benefits.

Because enrollment dates and individual circumstances can vary, confirm the effective date of your Medicare coverage before determining your final HSA contribution.

Your HSA Can Still Be Valuable After Medicare

Enrolling in Medicare means you can no longer make HSA contributions, but it doesn't mean you can't use the money already in your account. You can continue pulling from your HSA after enrolling in Medicare, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses can generally remain tax-free. HSA funds can therefore continue to be a valuable resource for health care expenses throughout retirement.

The key is planning ahead. Understanding when Medicare coverage begins, and when HSA contributions must stop, can help you preserve the tax advantages you've worked to build.

For years, Medicare generally has not covered medications when they are prescribed solely for weight loss. Federal law currently excludes drugs used for weight loss from the standard Part D benefit. However, a new, limited exception to the rule became available on July 1, 2026.

Through a temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, certain people with Medicare drug coverage may now be able to get select GLP-1 medications intended for weight management for a $50 copay per one-month supply. The Bridge program does not eliminate the underlying Part D exclusion for weight-loss drugs. Instead, it provides a separate, temporary pathway for eligible Medicare beneficiaries.

Before looking at the new Bridge program, it helps to understand GLP-1 coverage up to this point.

Medicare Part D can cover certain GLP-1 medications when they are prescribed for a medically accepted condition other than weight loss. Depending on the particular drug, those conditions may include:

If your doctor prescribes a GLP-1 for one of these approved conditions, or something other than weight loss, your Medicare Part D plan may cover it. Which specific drugs are covered and what requirements apply depend on your particular plan.

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program is a temporary program scheduled to run from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. It gives eligible people with Medicare drug coverage access to certain GLP-1 medications for the purpose of weight management for a flat $50 copay per one-month supply. The program is available nationwide, including in U.S. territories.

One important note is that the Bridge program operates outside the regular Part D benefit. Medicare pays participating pharmacies through a central processor rather than having your Part D plan pay for the medication. This means your Part D plan does not have to opt into the Bridge program for you to participate.

Which Drugs Are Covered as of August 2026?

As of August 2026, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge includes these medications when prescribed to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction:

           Foundayo — tablet

           Wegovy — injection or tablet

Zepbound — KwikPen only (not single-dose vials or pens)

Because the Bridge program is evolving, Medicare may update covered products over the duration of the program.

          What About Ozempic and Mounjaro?

The names of these medications are familiar to many people, so you may wonder if they're covered. The answer is no: Ozempic and Mounjaro are not covered through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. Instead, they remain subject to regular Medicare Part D coverage rules and are most often prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes. Wegovy and Zepbound, on the other hand, are versions approved specifically for chronic weight management.

So, if you take a GLP-1 medication for a condition that can be covered under Part D, continue working with your health care provider and Medicare drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan regarding coverage. If, however, you are seeking a pathway to weight management, then the Bridge program may be worth pursuing. The first step is to find out if you're eligible.

Who Qualifies for the GLP-1 Bridge?

To participate, you must be 18 or older, have Medicare drug coverage, and meet one of Medicare's clinical eligibility standards when starting treatment.

You may qualify if you have:

A body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher

A BMI of 30 or higher plus heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or chronic kidney disease at stage 3a or higher

A BMI of 27 or higher plus prediabetes, a previous heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease

You may also qualify for coverage of a GLP-1 drug if you started taking a GLP-1 drug prior to the start of the Bridge program and you met the eligibility conditions when you started taking the drug, even though you may not qualify now. For example, if you started taking a GLP-1 drug in January 2025 and at that time your BMI was 35, you may qualify for the Bridge program even if your current BMI is 25.

Medicare has additional clinical definitions and requirements for these conditions. Your health care provider will determine whether you meet the program's criteria.

You generally aren't eligible for the Bridge program if you already get GLP-1 drugs through your Part D coverage or if you have certain conditions for which GLP-1 treatment may be covered through regular Part D rules, including:

           Type 2 diabetes

           Moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea

           Certain fatty liver disease

Having one of these conditions may make you ineligible for the Bridge program even if your particular Medicare drug plan doesn't currently cover the medication. In that situation, regular Part D coverage and exception rules may apply.

You must also have qualifying Medicare drug coverage. That can include:

A standalone Medicare Part D plan

A Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage

A Special Needs Plan with drug coverage

Certain employer or union Medicare drug plans

          How Do You Get Started?

The process starts with your health care provider rather than your Medicare drug plan.

Talk with your health care provider. Ask whether one of the covered medications is medically appropriate for you and whether you meet Medicare's BMI and health-condition requirements.

If they agree, your provider will send a prescription to your pharmacy. The medication must be prescribed as part of a treatment plan that includes diet and physical activity.

The first fill may take extra time. The pharmacy's initial claim may trigger a prior-authorization request to your provider. Once the required prior authorization is submitted, CMS says an approval or denial will generally be communicated within 72 hours.

Watch for a letter from Medicare. If your prior authorization is approved, Medicare will send you a letter confirming coverage through the Bridge program.

Be prepared to provide your Medicare information at the pharmacy. Your pharmacy may need your Medicare Number or, in some circumstances, the last four digits of your Social Security Number to process the claim.

Once approved, the prior authorization generally remains valid through December 31, 2027, including for refills and dose changes. A new authorization may be required if you change to a different GLP-1 medication covered by the Bridge.

How Does the $50 Copay Work?

The $50 copay works differently from what you normally pay for medications covered by your Part D plan because Bridge program medications are paid for outside your regular Part D benefit.

For medications you receive through the Bridge program:

You pay a flat $50 copay for a one-month supply

The $50 does not count toward your Part D deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit

It will not appear on your Part D Explanation of Benefits or your Medicare Summary Notice

Extra Help does not reduce the $50 copay

The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan cannot be used to spread the $50 cost across monthly payments

Those differences are especially important to understand if you receive Extra Help or are tracking your prescription drug spending toward your Part D out-of-pocket limit.

          Your Next Step

If you think you might qualify for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, start by talking with your health care provider. Your provider can help determine whether one of the covered medications is appropriate for you and whether you meet Medicare's eligibility requirements.

The GLP-1 Bridge is currently scheduled to end December 31, 2027, so it's also worth discussing how your treatment and coverage options could change after the program period ends.

If you have questions about your current Medicare drug coverage, we're happy to help you understand how your plan works and where the GLP-1 Bridge program may fit in.

This article is accurate as of August 2026. The GLP-1 Bridge program keeps evolving, so it is good to keep an eye out for ongoing updates.

The phone rings. The voice on the other end says your name, your age, and your address. It sounds official. It may even sound friendly. And within a minute, you are being asked to confirm your Medicare number. What do you do?

Complaints about Medicare-related scam calls have climbed sharply over the past year. Reports to the Better Business Bureau indicate that these kinds of calls remain a major concern for people Medicare. Some have even described getting dozens of these calls in a single day. Enrollment season tends to make it worse, because legitimate outreach picks up at the same time criminals do.

Here is how these calls tend to sound, and how to protect yourself.

Many Medicare scam calls follow similar scripts. Once you recognize a few key patterns, the calls lose a lot of their power.

          "You qualify for extra benefits"

A recorded voice says it is reaching out to make sure you receive unclaimed Medicare benefits. The recording asks whether you have Part A and Part B, then transfers you to a live person. The real goal is either to get your personal information or to switch you to a plan you did not ask for.

          "Your card is expiring"

The caller warns that your Medicare card is about to expire, or that your coverage could be interrupted unless you verify a few details. Fear and urgency are the strategy here. If you hand over your Medicare number or Social Security number, criminals can use it to steal your identity or bill you for services you never received.

"Something free is on the way"

Free braces. Free hearing aids. Free gift cards or a free smartphone. The offered gift is bait. One woman in Texas received a large box of orthopedic braces she never ordered, and later learned Medicare had been billed more than $700 for them. Her secondary insurer was charged as well, and additional claims were filed for supplies she never requested.

Fraudulent claims can also leave inaccurate information in your medical records, including diagnoses for conditions you do not have.

Fake Agents Are Part of the Problem

Not every scammer sounds like a robot. Some present themselves as licensed insurance agents. They may reference a well-known carrier, quote a plan name, or offer to walk you through your options right now over the phone.

A few things a real agent will not do:

Pressure you to decide something during a first call

Refuse to give you a full name, license number, or office phone number

Ask you to pay by gift card, wire transfer, or a payment app

Tell you that you must act today or lose your coverage

Show up at your door uninvited to sell you a plan

Verifying an agent is simpler than most people expect. Ask for their name and license number, then hang up and call the agency's main office number yourself. You can also check the license with your state Department of Insurance. Anyone who is legitimate will not mind you doing this; they know you need to be careful.

Treat unexpected Medicare calls with skepticism, even friendly ones

Never give your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank details to someone who called you

Remember that Medicare generally reaches out by mail first and does not call to ask for your Medicare number or banking information

Hang up on anyone who pressures you or claims your coverage is at risk

Read your Medicare Summary Notices and Explanation of Benefits statements and look for charges you do not recognize

           Report anything unfamiliar right away

Hanging up may feel rude, but it is the single most effective thing you can do.

If You Think You Already Shared Something You Shouldn't Have

Act quickly, but do not panic. Write down what you shared and when. Review your recent statements. Then report it. You can contact the Senior Medicare Patrol program in your state, call 1-800-MEDICARE, or file a report with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Scam calls work because they catch people on their own and unsure. Having a licensed agent you already trust means you have someone in your corner. You have a number you can call to ask whether an offer is real before you respond to it. If you have questions about a call you received, or you want a second set of eyes on your current coverage, reach out to our office. We are here to help you!

As we head into fall, it's time to think about an important Medicare milestone: the Annual Enrollment Period. If you're on Medicare, this is your chance to review your coverage and make changes if your needs have shifted, or if there will be changes to your current plan that you don’t like.

What It Means for Your 2026 Coverage

If you buy your own health insurance, you may have noticed your 2026 premium jumped. A lot of people did. Here's what happened, who it hit hardest, and what you can do about it.

          The Short Version

For the past few years, extra financial help lowered monthly premiums for people who buy coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. That help was called the enhanced premium tax credit. It started in 2021 and ran through the end of 2025. It expired on January 1, 2026.

When it expired, the older rules came back. One of those rules is the "subsidy cliff."

          What Is the "Subsidy Cliff"?

The subsidy cliff is an income cutoff. Under the current rules, if your household income goes above 400% of the federal poverty level, you no longer qualify for a premium tax credit. Not a smaller credit. No credit at all.

The exact cutoff depends on your household size. For 2026, it is approximately $62,600 for a single person and $84,600 for a two-person household. Earn a dollar over that line, and you could be responsible for the full health insurance premium on your own.

That's why people call it a "cliff". Stay just under the line, and you may get help. Go just over it, and the help can disappear.

          Who It Hit Hardest

Older, middle-income people have generally felt it the most. There are two reasons for that. First, they tend to sit closer to that income line. Second, premiums rise with age.

Here's a real example from the Bipartisan Policy Center. A 60-year-old couple earning about $85,000 a year sits at roughly 402% of the poverty level. That puts them just over the cliff. Their estimated yearly premium for 2026 could reach about $22,600. That's close to a quarter of their income. Under the enhanced credits, their cost would have been capped near 8.5% of income.

The enrollment numbers tell the same story. People earning just above the cliff, between 400% and 500% of the poverty level, made up only 3% of 2025 sign-ups. But they accounted for 27% of the decrease in sign-ups from 2025 to 2026, according to KFF. Many looked at the new price and walked away.

          What This Means for You

Marketplace credits are calculated from the income you report, so if you end up earning more than you estimated and cross the 400% line, you may have to pay some of those credits back at tax time. For 2026, that risk is bigger than it used to be. Recent law removed some of the caps that once limited how much certain enrollees had to repay.

This is why small income changes can matter so much near the cliff. A raise, a year-end bonus, or a stretch of extra freelance work could be enough to push you over the line and significantly change what you owe.

          What You Can Do

Review your options during open enrollment.

Don't assume last year's plan is still your best fit for this year.

          Compare plan levels.

Some people move to a plan with a higher deductible to bring down the monthly cost. That trade-off works for some budgets and not others, so look at the full picture of all your costs (monthly premiums, anticipated out-of-pocket medical costs, etc.).

          Estimate your income carefully.

KFF and HealthCare.gov both offer calculators that can help you see where you may land and what help you may qualify for.

          Talk to a licensed agent.

An agent can walk you through the choices based on your income, your household, and your area. This is one of those decisions where a real conversation with a knowledgeable agent helps.

          One More Thing to Watch

Congress has been debating whether to bring the enhanced credits back. The House passed a three-year extension in early 2026, and lawmakers have floated several other versions with different income limits and rules. As of now, nothing has been finalized, and the rules could still change. For the latest, check HealthCare.gov or your state's Marketplace.

Your Workforce Has Never Looked Like This Before

For the first time in modern history, five generations are working side by side: Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. Each group entered the workforce during a different economy, formed different expectations about work, and is managing a different stage of life right now. That mix creates real opportunities for mentorship and collaboration. It also creates a genuine challenge for employers trying to build one benefits plan that resonates with all of them.

One-Size-Fits-All Benefits Are Losing Their Grip

A standard medical plan with a generic retirement match used to be enough to check the box. It isn't anymore. A 24-year-old paying off student loans and a 63-year-old coordinating benefits with Medicare have almost nothing in common financially, yet they're often offered the exact same menu. Employers who keep treating benefits as a single flat offering risk losing employees to competitors who let people choose what actually applies to their life.

What Each Generation Tends to Prioritize

Traditionalists and many Baby Boomers are focused on how employer coverage coordinates with Medicare, and whether retiree benefits or a Medigap-style supplement will bridge any gaps. Gen X, often called the sandwich generation, tends to value benefits that support caregiving for aging parents and growing kids at the same time, along with solid disability and life insurance coverage. Millennials frequently prioritize family-building benefits, mental health support, and flexibility, while carrying meaningful student debt. Gen Z, the newest entrants, tends to respond to financial wellness education, voluntary benefits they can customize, and benefits tied to career growth. None of these priorities are wrong. They're just different, and a plan built around only one generation's needs will underserve the rest.

The Real Fix Isn't More Benefits, It's More Choice

Adding benefit after benefit to satisfy every generation gets expensive fast, and much of the spending goes unused. A more effective approach is building flexibility into the benefits you already offer. Cafeteria-style plans, voluntary benefit menus, and lifestyle spending accounts let each employee direct a defined budget toward what matters to them, whether that's caregiving support, fertility benefits, student loan assistance, or extra retirement contributions. The goal isn't to offer everything to everyone. It's to let people opt into what fits their life stage, without you having to guess correctly for every employee at once.

Watch for Quiet Age Bias in How Benefits Get Used

It's worth periodically reviewing how your benefits actually get used across age groups, not just how they're designed on paper. A wellness program built around gym reimbursements may see heavy use from younger employees and almost none from older ones managing chronic conditions differently. A retirement match structured a certain way might favor employees already saving aggressively over those just starting out. None of this means the benefit is wrong, but it's a signal worth investigating rather than ignoring.

          Communication Has to Flex Too

Even a well-designed benefits package falls flat if people don't understand it or don't feel it was explained to them well. Generational research consistently shows different communication preferences: some employees respond best to in-person meetings or printed materials, others to email, and others to text or an app. Recent workforce surveys have also found that younger employees expect significantly more guidance from employers on choosing and using their benefits than older employees do. That means open enrollment can't rely on a single all-staff email and call it done. A mixed approach, including live sessions, short video walkthroughs, and one-on-one time with HR or a broker, tends to reach more of the workforce.

          Where to Start

You don't need to redesign your entire benefits program overnight. Start by looking at your current enrollment data by age group, if you have it, to see where participation is uneven. Survey your workforce directly about what they wish they had. Consider adding one flexible option, like a lifestyle spending account or an expanded voluntary benefits menu, rather than overhauling everything at once. And loop in your broker early. Benchmarking your plan against what similar employers are offering across generations can reveal gaps you might not see from the inside, and help you prioritize the changes that will matter most to your team.

The Eye Exam That Does More Than Check Your Prescription

Did you know an eye exam could be the key to spotting a health issue elsewhere in your body? If you haven’t scheduled one in a while, you’re not the only one. Many people put off routine eye care because they assume it is only necessary if their vision seems blurry or they need new glasses or contacts. But a comprehensive eye exam is about far more than reading letters at a distance of twenty feet. It gives a doctor a direct look inside your body, and that view can offer valuable clues about your overall health, not just your eyesight.

According to clinical guidelines from the American Optometric Association (AOA), a comprehensive eye exam can help detect early signs of more than 270 systemic and chronic diseases, including:

The reason an eye exam can pick up on so much is that a doctor can directly view blood vessels and nerve tissue through your eyes without an x-ray, a CT scan, or any invasive procedure. Subtle changes in those blood vessels or in the optic nerve can be an early warning sign of a health issue developing elsewhere, which is part of why annual comprehensive eye exams are recommended for most adults, not just those who wear glasses or contacts.

Bridging the Gap: Health Insurance Alone May Not Cover You

Knowing the medical value of an exam is the first step, but it’s also important to understand how that care is financed. It is a common misconception that a major medical or health insurance plan automatically covers routine eye care. In practice, most health plans are built to cover care that is considered medically necessary, such as treating an eye injury, managing an eye disease, or diagnosing a specific symptom you report to a doctor. Routine, preventive vision care, like an annual comprehensive eye exam simply to check your eye health and update your prescription, along with the cost of glasses or contact lenses, typically falls outside what a standard health plan pays for.

That gap is exactly where a separate vision insurance plan or a vision rider added to an existing policy can help. Rather than paying the full cost of exams, frames, lenses, and contacts out of pocket, a vision benefit is designed specifically to offset those routine, recurring expenses that major medical coverage generally does not address.

          What Vision Insurance Typically Includes

While benefits vary by carrier and plan, most vision insurance policies are built around a similar core structure. Typically, this includes coverage for an annual comprehensive eye exam, usually for a modest copay, along with an allowance or discount applied toward the cost of frames, prescription lenses, or contact lenses. Many plans also offer materials allowances that renew every year or two, discounts on additional pairs of glasses for backup or specialty use, and in some cases, reduced rates on elective procedures like LASIK. Because premiums for vision coverage tend to be low relative to the potential savings on exams and eyewear, it is often one of the more approachable supplemental benefits available.

How Vision Coverage Fits Your Broader Supplemental Strategy

Vision insurance is just one piece of a broader strategy aimed at reducing unexpected out-of-pocket costs and supporting whole-person health, rather than a standalone add-on. One of our licensed agents can walk you through the vision insurance plans and options available to you, help you understand what each plan covers, and help you decide which policy makes sense for your situation and budget.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a long-awaited international adventure, setting off on a trip is always exciting—but can also be unpredictable. That’s why preparing for the unexpected, especially when it comes to your health, is essential. Knowing what your medical coverage includes (and doesn’t) while traveling can help you stay healthy, avoid costly surprises, and soak up the unforgettable moments on your journey.

Let’s walk through some proactive steps you can take before packing your bags—from vaccinations and insurance to emergency planning and fraud protection.

          1. Know What Your Health Plan Covers—And Where

Medical surprises aren’t on anyone’s itinerary—but it’s best to be prepared. Start by knowing how your insurance policy covers (or doesn’t) the region you’re traveling to.

          Individual health policyholders,

review your insurer’s network coverage. Some plans only cover in-network or state-specific services, while others offer broader emergency coverage or travel-specific riders. Consult your insurance agent to get help reviewing your policy.

          Medicare beneficiaries,

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) typically doesn’t cover medical care outside the U.S., except in limited circumstances. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, it may include emergency and urgent coverage abroad, but this varies by provider. Check your plan’s

          Evidence of Coverage

or speak to your plan representative before traveling.

          2. Consider Supplemental Insurance

If you're a frequent traveler or heading abroad, look into some options to help cover you. Some options include:

           Travel Medical Insurance

: Plans offer emergency coverage during trips outside the U.S. and tend to be affordable.

           Evacuation Insurance

: This covers transport to a qualified medical facility if the nearest care is inadequate. An evacuation clause is often, but not always, included in a travel insurance plan.

           Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

: Some Medigap policies cover emergency care abroad, typically up to plan limits and with a deductible.

           Critical Illness Insurance

: A lump-sum payout can provide financial flexibility in case you’re diagnosed with a covered condition like a heart attack or stroke during travel.

Be sure to read the fine print—some policies require you to be under a certain age, and preexisting conditions may not be covered. Your licensed insurance agent can help talk you through your options.

          3. Keep Your Medical Info Handy

Consider using a secure health app or digital wallet to access all your health records quickly. But just in case your phone is inaccessible, bring physical copies of these important documents as well:

           Your insurance or Medicare cards

Emergency contact numbers (include the country code +1 if you’re traveling abroad)

           A medication list with dosages

           Allergy and medical condition alerts

Pack all essential paperwork together in a waterproof sleeve in your luggage, and leave a second copy with someone back home.

          4. Schedule Preventive Care Before Departure

Most insurance plans cover preventive care services like wellness visits, vaccinations, and screenings. Before your trip, check these tasks off your list:

           Get vaccinated

: Make sure you’re up to date on your flu, COVID-19, and tetanus shots. If traveling internationally, check the CDC recommendations for the region you’re visiting, which may include Hepatitis A/B, typhoid, or yellow fever vaccinations.

           Stock up on medications

: Make sure you have enough for your entire trip, including extras in case of delays. Some health insurance plans offer mail-order pharmacy options.

           Visit your provider

: Discuss any destination-specific risks and request a travel health consultation if needed.

          5. Prepare for Fraud Protection Abroad

Travelers are common targets for scams. If you’re a Medicare beneficiary, protect your

          Medicare number

like a credit card. Fraudsters may try to use it to get free services or access your personal health data.

          Tips:

Never share your Medicare number via phone or email.

Use only official websites or verified agents to review your policy while traveling.

Regularly check your policy’s Explanation of Benefits (EOB) for suspicious claims.

          6. Create a Medical Emergency Plan

Ask yourself some questions to be ready for an emergency:

Where is the nearest hospital or clinic?

           Do they accept your insurance?

What’s the procedure if you need medical evacuation?

If you have any medical conditions, it’s wise to carry an alert card in your wallet, including translated versions if you’re traveling in areas where English is not commonly spoken.

          7. Stay Active and Healthy on the Go

          To adapt an old phrase:

           Health never takes a vacation

. It’s all too easy to leave good habits behind when you head out on a trip, but taking care of your body is just as important whether you’re at home or away.

           Move regularly

: Stretch and walk every few hours, especially on long flights or bus rides.

           Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Drink plenty of water to counter the effects of extra activities, extra sun—and maybe that extra mai tai on the beach.

           Eat balanced meals:

Meals on the go tend to lack a healthy dose of fiber, which can lead to digestive distress. Be sure to seek out veggies and whole grains or consider bringing a fiber supplement with you.

           Rest

: Fatigue lowers immunity. Don’t skip on sleep!

           Keep germs at bay:

Use hand sanitizer, wash your hands frequently, and consider wearing a mask on crowded airplanes or mass transit.

Don’t forget these essentials to keep yourself feeling your best—so you can focus on making great memories.

          Conclusion

Travel is one of life’s great joys—but staying healthy and protected while you’re away starts long before you leave home. By understanding your health insurance benefits, considering supplemental coverage, and taking simple precautions, you can set off with confidence. Whether you’re hiking the Rockies or relaxing on a beach in Mexico, being prepared means you can focus on the adventure ahead.

          Safe travels!

has emerged as a powerful tool for delivering care—breaking down traditional barriers and expanding access for millions of Americans.

Whether you're enrolled in Medicare or are under 65 and navigating your own insurance options, telehealth services offer an array of features and benefits that improve convenience, affordability, and health outcomes.

          What is Telehealth?

Telehealth refers to the delivery of healthcare services through digital platforms—such as video calls, phone consultations, or secure messaging—allowing patients to connect with medical professionals remotely. It encompasses a wide range of services, from general wellness visits and chronic disease management to mental health counseling and urgent care.

          Telehealth for Medicare Beneficiaries

Medicare has embraced telehealth, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, making it more accessible than ever. Key benefits include:

          1. Expanded Access to Care

Medicare covers telehealth visits with primary care providers, specialists, and mental health professionals—even from the comfort of your home. This is especially valuable for individuals with mobility issues or those living in rural areas with limited local medical resources.

          2. Chronic Condition Management

Many Medicare recipients manage ongoing health concerns like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. Telehealth enables regular check-ins with care teams, medication management, and personalized treatment adjustments—without the need for in-person visits.

          3. Mental Health Services

Under Medicare Part B, beneficiaries can access remote behavioral health services, including therapy and psychiatric evaluations. These services are now covered even if the patient is at home, improving accessibility and comfort.

          4. Cost Savings

Telehealth visits are often billed at the same rate as in-person visits under Medicare. With reduced transportation costs and less time spent in waiting rooms, it’s a more cost-effective option for many.

          Telehealth for Individuals Under 65

For younger adults and families not yet on Medicare, telehealth is increasingly built into private insurance plans, Medicaid, and employer-sponsored coverage. Here’s what to expect:

          1. Convenience and Flexibility

Busy schedules, child care responsibilities, and long commutes often make it difficult to attend in-person doctor appointments. Telehealth removes these obstacles by offering flexible appointment times—including evenings and weekends.

          2. Affordable Urgent Care

Many virtual health platforms now offer low-cost urgent care services—ideal for common conditions like colds, UTIs, rashes, or minor injuries. Some plans even provide 24/7 access to physicians for a flat monthly fee or copay.

          3. Access to Specialists

Need to consult a dermatologist, endocrinologist, or nutritionist? Telehealth makes it easier to see specialists who may not be located nearby. Some networks even facilitate second opinions from top-tier institutions.

          4. Mental and Behavioral Health Support

The stigma around mental health is fading, and demand for support is growing. Teletherapy, psychiatric assessments, and even group therapy sessions are available through many online platforms—often with minimal wait times.

Features to Look for in a Telehealth Provider

A quality telehealth platform should offer:

Telehealth is not just a temporary solution—it’s a fundamental shift in how we access and experience healthcare. For Medicare beneficiaries and younger adults alike, telehealth services provide faster, easier, and more comfortable ways to get the care they need.

If you're exploring your health insurance options, don't hesitate to contact a licensed insurance advisor. They can help you understand what services are covered and how to make the most of them. If you want to learn more about how telehealth fits into your current plan, your insurance carrier or medical provider's office can help you.

          What Is the Grandparent Scam?

These scams usually start with a phone call from someone pretending to be your grandchild (or another close relative). They’ll say they’re in trouble—maybe stuck in jail or in a hospital—and they need money fast for bail, legal fees, or emergency expenses.

To make things even more convincing, they may hand the phone off to someone pretending to be a lawyer or a police officer. And they’ll likely ask you not to tell anyone—saying it’s a “private” or “sensitive” situation.

That sense of urgency is key to the scam. It’s meant to bypass your instinct to double-check and make you act fast—before you have time to think it through or talk to someone else.

These calls often come late at night or early in the morning, when you’re more likely to be caught off guard. The scammer might not even say who they are—just “Grandma, it’s me”—and hope you fill in the blank for them. From there, they use that information to sound more convincing.

Some victims have been asked to send money via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or even in cash via courier—all methods that are difficult or impossible to trace or reverse. According to the FCC, scammers using this method have stolen
