What Is Native American Health Insurance?
Native American health insurance is coverage through the Marketplace paired with the special benefits and protections the Affordable Care Act provides for American Indians and Alaska Natives. If you're a member of a federally recognized tribe or an Alaska Native shareholder, you can enroll in a Marketplace plan that lowers your costs, broadens your choice of providers, and works alongside the care you already receive through the Indian Health Service (IHS). In short, it adds to the benefits you already have.

Who Can Enroll?
These special Marketplace benefits are available to members of federally recognized tribes and shareholders in an Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) corporation. If your household includes both tribal members and non-members, you can still apply together, and the extra savings will apply to the tribal members on the plan. To unlock year-round enrollment and the cost protections, you'll need to provide documentation of tribal membership or shareholder status, such as a tribal enrollment card. We'll walk you through exactly what's needed.
What's Covered?
Your plan includes the same essential health benefits as any ACA Marketplace plan (preventive care, doctor and hospital visits, prescriptions, maternity care, mental health services, etc.), with no denials or higher prices for pre-existing conditions.
On top of that, you may qualify for meaningful cost protections:
- Zero cost-sharing plans for members with household income between 100% and 300% of the federal poverty level — no deductibles, copays, or coinsurance when you receive care.
- Limited cost-sharing plans, available regardless of income, so you pay nothing out of pocket for services received through an Indian health care provider.
- Premium tax credits that can lower your monthly premium if you qualify based on income.
And you keep full access to the Indian Health Service, tribal, and urban Indian programs you already use. When you get care there, your provider can bill your Marketplace plan, which brings more resources back into your community.
When and How to Enroll
You don't have to wait for the yearly Open Enrollment Period. Members of federally recognized tribes and ANCSA shareholders can enroll in a Marketplace plan any time of year, and can change plans as often as once a month. To get started, you'll provide documentation of your tribal membership or shareholder status, then choose the plan that fits your family best. We'll help handle the details with you from start to finish — confirming your eligibility, comparing your options, and making sure your benefits are applied correctly.
